Week 2: Waiver Wire Gems

With how thin RB’s are, make sure to snap up Alfred Morris before the next guy does.

Week 1 has brought us a few fantasy studs that were flying under the radar of many owners. Here are several guys who thoroughly impressed during week 1, and look to be in line to continue. Be quick to nab these guys up, as swift and effective waive wire maneuvering is often what gives owners that last bit of separation needed to win big.

Alfred Morris (RB – Was) – Very few people saw this coming, but Mike Shanahan has thrown yet another curve ball in his backfield, and proclaimed Morris the starter. Considering this year is very slim-pickens as far as effective RB’s go, do not hesitate on Morris. He has the starting job for now, and repaid that faith with 96 yards and 2 scores on 28 carries in week 1. Even if your starting running backs are both studs, pick this guy up as other hungry owners will be in the market for a trade. Morris has the potential to give you all of what DeMarco Murray provided owners last year, and will likely be gone in almost all leagues before this weekend.

Randall Cobb (WR – GB) – I had him ranked quite high among late-round receivers going into the draft. To restate the point, this guy has monster speed and Aaron Rodgers throwing him the ball. He hauled in all 9 balls that were thrown his way on Sunday for 77 yards. He has massive potential going forwards, especially if you play in a league that rewards for return statistics too. Cobb will be returning both kicks and punts for the foreseeable future, and managed to run one back for a TD on Sunday, albeit because of a block in the back that the refs failed to penalize.

Stephen Hill (WR – NYJ) – Has some crazy raw attributes going for him in terms of size and speed. Defenses should key in on Santonio Holmes, leaving him open, especially for red zone scores as seen with his 5 catch, 2 TD performance vs Buffalo this past week. Play this one a little more conservatively though, until we can figure out whether or not the Mark Sanchez we saw this past week plans on sticking around for the remaining 15 games.

Alshon Jeffery (WR-Chi) – Another guy I was big on during the offseason… Managed to make 3 big catches for 80 yards and a TD. Like Stephen Hill, he has all the raw attributes necessary to succeed, and since I personally rate Cutler and the Bears higher than Sanchez and his Jets, I’d take this guy over Stephen Hill if both are available.

Kyle Rudolph (TE – Min) – Ponder was confident throwing to the young TE, and his performance should only improve. Made an outrageous catch late in the game to set up a field goal, and with Shiancoe gone, he will get all the snaps this season. Still owned in under 10% of all leagues.

Notable omissions: It’s going to take at least one or two more solid weeks from Mark Sanchez before I am ready to start thinking about my backup QB for him. Similarly, I feel that Ogletree’s performance will decline once the ‘boys star WR’s get their health back.
